Pestalozzi

2006

In September 2006, I was commissioned by The Times to document a remarkable group of scholars arriving at the Pestalozzi International Village in East Sussex. These teenagers, selected from some of the world’s most disadvantaged regions, had traveled thousands of miles to begin a rigorous two-year scholarship program.

Living together in the multi-cultural community of the Sussex village, these high-achieving students pursued the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma—a challenging curriculum designed to foster global citizenship. The Pestalozzi model, centered on the holistic development of "Head, Heart, and Hands," aimed to equip these future leaders with the skills to return and make a significant impact in their home countries.

While the Sedlescombe residential village in East Sussex closed in 2019, the Pestalozzi International Foundation continues its mission through a strategic merger (now Pestalozzi International), funding scholarships for students to attend United World Colleges (UWC) and other global institutions.
